Randal Arthur Alcock was born in Belper in 1886, the son of John and Lucy Alcock. In July 1902, when Alcock was 15, he went to work for Crompton & Evans' Union Bank at its Alfreton branch. That bank was acquired by the much larger Parr's Bank in 1914.
During the First World War Alcock left his job at the bank to join the army. He went on active service in April 1916, and by 1918 was a Second Lieutenant in the East Yorkshire Regiment. He was killed in action in France on 1 September 1918. He was 31 years old.
