Leslie Ashby was born on 18 October 1898, the only son of John Ashby, a cashier, and Annie Ashby. He was educated at Silcoates School, Wakefield.
In May 1915, when Ashby was 16 years old, he went to work for Manchester & County Bank. Two years later, in March 1917, he left his job at the bank's Stockport branch to join the army. In June 1917, after training, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Lancashire Fusiliers. He went to France in August 1917.
Second Lieutenant Leslie Ashby was killed in action in France on 20 October 1918, two days after his 20th birthday.
