Leonard William Armstrong was born on 3 April 1884, the son of Thomas and Dinah Armstrong.

 

On his 16th birthday, 3 April 1900, Armstrong started work for Bank of Whitehaven as an apprentice at its Workington branch. After completing his apprenticeship he remained with the bank as a clerk. In 1916 Bank of Whitehaven was taken over by Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co. Shortly afterwards, Armstrong was transferred to the bank's Wigton branch.

 

In September 1916 Armstrong left the bank to go on military service. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 19 May 1917, while serving as a Second Lieutenant in the Border Regiment. He was 33 years old.
