Herbert Cowell Ainsworth was born in Darwen on 25 November 1889. He worked for Manchester & County Bank as a clerk at its Darwen branch. 

Ainsworth joined the army in September 1915, and served as a Private in the 26th (Bankers') Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. He was killed in action on the Somme on 4 October 1916, when he was 25 years old.
