Harry Laurence Appleyard was born on 14 April 1894, the son of Alfred Appleyard, a cashier for National Provincial Bank of England, and his wife Annie.
In about 1910, when Appleyard was 16 years old, he went to work for his father's bank as an apprentice in its Thornaby branch. He completed his apprenticeship in 1914, and was promoted to a clerkship, still at Thornaby branch. In June 1915 he was transferred to Stockton-on-Tees branch.
During the First World War Appleyard joined the army, and by 1917 was serving as a Lance Corporal in the Durham Light Infantry. He died in Belgium on 23 October 1917. He was 23 years old.
