Harry Ainger was born in Caistor on 4 June 1884, the son of Charles Ainger, a chemist's assistant, and his wife Catherine. After finishing his education Ainger became apprentice to his father, who by that time was a self-employed mineral water manufacturer. He subsequently went to work for Union of London & Smiths Bank as a clerk at its Brigg branch. He was later promoted to cashier there.

In September 1912 Ainger married Lizzie Rayner. They had a son together, born in 1914.

Ainger attested for military service in December 1915, and was mobilised in April 1917. He was posted to France as a Private in the London Regiment the following August, and was killed in action there on 27 October 1917. He was 33 years old.

Harry Ainger is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office.
