Harold Edward Armstrong was born in Irthlingborough, Northamptonshire, on 4 January 1896, the son of William and Mary Lilias Armstrong, both schoolteachers. In July 1910, when Armstrong was 14 years old, he went to work for Northamptonshire Union Bank.

 

Armstrong was a member of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, and during the First World War left his job at the bank's Wellingborough branch to go on active service. Signaller Harold Edward Armstrong was killed in action on 20 April 1917, when HMS Nepaulin, the minesweeper in which he was serving, was sunk by a German submarine. He was 21 years old.
