George Aked

Bank: Nottingham & Nottinghamshire Banking Co

Place of work: Shepshed branch

Died: 5 March 1915

George Aked was born in Nottingham on 19 April 1895, the son of George Aked and his wife Sarah. He was educated at Nottingham High School, where he was a member of the Officers Training Corps, and was one of the High School Contingent reviewed by the King at Windsor in 1911. In October 1912, when a company of the territorial 5th Battalion of the Leicestershire Regiment was formed at Shepshed, he was commissioned. As the only officer resident at Shepshed, he took sole charge of the company's training. He was promoted to Lieutenant in August 1914.

Meanwhile, in 1911, Aked had begun working for Nottingham & Nottinghamshire Banking Co at its Shepshed branch.

At the outbreak of war Aked was mobilised. His battalion embarked for France in February 1915 and was immediately sent to the front. Lieutenant Aked was killed in action at Le Bizet on the Western Front on 5 March 1915. He was 19 years old.

His commanding officer later wrote: 'We have lost in him an officer of much promise. He had developed very rapidly since he joined us. He was extraordinarily conscientious in his work, and everything his duty called him to do he did faithfully, thoroughly and well.'
