Edward John Austen was born in Tonbridge in 1895, the son of John Charles Austen, an ironmonger, and his wife Jessie Cornelia. He worked for Union of London & Smiths Bank at its Maidstone branch.
Early in the First World War Austen went on active service in the army, serving as a Second Lieutenant, and later Lieutenant, in the London Regiment. He died in France on 22 March 1918. He was 22 years old.
Edward Austen is commemorated on bank war memorials at NatWest Maidstone branch and NatWest City of London office.
