Andrew Aitken was born in Airdrie in 1888, the only son of John F Aitken, an ironmonger, and his wife Margaret. He had a sister, also named Margaret. He worked for the Royal Bank of Scotland at its head office in Edinburgh.
During the First World War Aitken joined the army, serving as a Lance Corporal in the Queen's Edinburgh Rifles, the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). He was killed in action in the Dardanelles on 19 June 1915.
Andrew Aitken is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
